We have an exciting opportunity for you to join our team as Safety & Health Officer. Reporting to the Head of Facilities, this full-time and permanent position is based in Mauritius.

 

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, review, and maintain the Company's Health, Safety, and Wellbeing policies, procedures, and management systems.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable Occupational Health and Safety legislation, regulations, codes of practice, and company standards.
  • Conduct routine workplace inspections, risk assessments, and safety audits to identify hazards and recommend corrective and preventive measures.
  • Monitor the implementation and effectiveness of corrective actions arising from audits, inspections, incidents, and risk assessments.
  • Investigate workplace incidents, accidents, injuries, near misses, and unsafe conditions; identify root causes and implement preventive measures.
  • Maintain accurate health and safety records, reports, permits, inspection registers, training records, incident logs, and other statutory documentation.
  • Coordinate and facilitate health and safety induction programmes, toolbox talks, awareness campaigns, and refresher training for employees and contractors.
  • Develop, implement, and regularly test emergency preparedness and response plans, including fire evacuation drills, first aid arrangements, and business continuity measures.
  • Conduct regular inspections of fire safety equipment, emergency exits, first aid facilities, and other safety-related systems to ensure operational readiness.
  • Liaise with relevant government authorities, regulatory bodies, external auditors, insurers, and consultants on health and safety matters.
  • Support the establishment and effective functioning of Health and Safety Committees and promote employee participation in safety initiatives.
  • Monitor contractor and visitor compliance with health and safety requirements while on Company premises.
  • Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual Health and Safety performance reports, including key trends, statistics, and recommendations to management.
  • Advise management and employees on emerging health and safety risks, legislative changes, and industry best practices.
  • Promote a positive safety culture through employee engagement, awareness programmes, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Coordinate occupational health and employee wellbeing programmes where applicable.
  • Participate in internal and external audits and support the implementation of audit findings and recommendations.
  • Any other duties as may be reasonably assigned from time to time in support of the Company's Health, Safety, and Wellbeing objectives.


Key requirements:

  • Well versed with occupational health and safety legislation, regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Sound knowledge of risk assessment methodologies, incident investigation, emergency preparedness, and workplace safety management systems.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Analytical, well organised, and resourceful.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to deliver training and safety awareness programmes.
  • Ability to build positive working relationships with employees, contractors, regulatory authorities, and external stakeholders.
  • Have at least 1 year experience in a Health & Safety role.
  • Experience conducting safety audits, workplace inspections, and incident investigations.
  • A degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health, Risk Management, Engineering, or an equivalent field.
  • Registered or eligible for registration as a Safety & Health Officer with the Ministry of Labour.
