We have an exciting opportunity for you to join our team as Finance Manager – Germany, reporting to the Regional Finance Director (also based in Budapest). This full-time and permanent position is based in Budapest, Hungary and carries full responsibility for the financial control and accounting operations of Vistra’s German business.

 

 

Purpose of the Role

 

 


We are looking for a Finance Manager to join the Finance Team, providing financial controllership over Vistra’s German business from our Budapest office.

 

Vistra is a leading global fund administration, trust and corporate services provider. The candidate will report to the Regional Finance Director and be a key member of the European Finance Controllership Team.

 


The role regularly interfaces with the Europe Finance Team, Group Finance, and Shared Services.

 

This is a hands-on financial controllership role with direct ownership of the German entity balance sheet, and the role holder will lead a small team comprising a Senior Accountant (based in Frankfurt) and an Accountant (based in Budapest).


Core areas of responsibility include:

 

  • Month-end and year-end closing
  • Insigthful variance analysis
  • General ledger and balance sheet reconciliations
  • Leading the statutory and management reporting
  • External audit management
  • Treasury and cash management
  • Tax provisions and related accounting
  • Financial compliance under HGB and German tax law
  • Leading the team of 2 analysts

 

This position provides significant opportunity for growth, broad exposure to Vistra’s European finance operations, and direct interaction with global stakeholders.

 

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Team leadership: Manage and develop a team of two – a Senior Accountant in Frankfurt and an Accountant in Budapest – setting priorities, reviewing deliverables, and ensuring quality and timeliness across the German accounting function.

 

Accounting operations: Oversee day-to-day accounting activities including revenue accounting and recognition, billing reconciliation, cash and bank accounting, accounts payable, intercompany transactions, expense accruals, other asset and liability accounting, and payroll.

 

Month-end and year-end close: Lead all close processes, meeting general ledger close deadlines, financial reporting and supplementary schedule deadlines. Hold sign-off authority for the reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and integrity of all positions by established deadlines.

 

External audit: End-to-end management of the German statutory audit (Jahresabschlussprüfung) – including audit planning, preparation of audit files, managing auditor timelines and queries, resolving findings, and ensuring timely sign-off. This is a leadership role in audit; the role holder proactively drives the audit cycle and manages the auditor relationship.

 

Tax and compliance: Prepare tax provisions for book reporting purposes, record corresponding accounting entries including deferred tax items, and collaborate with external tax advisers on forecasting, filings and payments. Ensure compliance with HGB, German tax obligations, and other relevant regulatory requirements.

 

Financial analysis: Provide insightful analysis on monthly financial results, including deep-dive analysis on key revenues and expenses and month-on-month variances, supporting the Regional Finance Director and wider business stakeholders.

 

Treasury: Perform treasury functions including monitoring of all cash activity, preparation of monthly cash flow projections, and executing or approving vendor payments and bank transfers.

 

Balance sheet ownership: Full ownership of the German entity balance sheet – ensuring accuracy, completeness, and integrity of all balance sheet positions including reconciliations, provisions, and intercompany balances.

 

Shared Services coordination: Set SOPs, deliverables, and expectations for Vistra Shared Services teams performing accounting operations on behalf of the German entities. Regularly communicate with shared service team leads to ensure work meets established requirements.

 

Systems: Play an active role in any ERP system developments, including SAP S/4HANA implementation as applicable, and related accounting process changes.

 

Stakeholder engagement: Interact extensively with the Regional Finance Director in Budapest and Group Finance, acting as the primary finance point of contact for the German business.

 

 

Key Requirements

 

  • Qualified Chartered Accountant or equivalent professional accounting qualification (mandatory)
  • 5+ years in a financial controllership or senior accounting role with direct team leadership
  • Business-quality German language skills – written and spoken (mandatory)
  • Fluent English – written and spoken (mandatory)
  • Proven track record of proactively managing external audits end-to-end, including auditor relationship management and audit sign-off
  • Demonstrated experience owning and signing off an entity-level balance sheet
  • Strong knowledge of HGB and German accounting and tax requirements
  • Commitment and ability to meet deadlines associated with month-end close and numerous recurring and ad-hoc deliverables
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and reconciliation skills
  • High proficiency with Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); advanced Excel skills required
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills; excellent attention to detail
  • High degree of professionalism, integrity, and confidentiality
  • Works effectively and collaboratively across geographies, including with teams across Group Finance

 

 

Preferred:

 

  • Strong familiarity with DATEV accounting software (strongly preferred)
  • Experience with SAP S/4HANA
  • Experience in the financial services, fund administration, or corporate services industry
